St. Johns College Executive Seminar Great Books

The Great Books Seminar addresses fundamental questions of the human condition through a close reading and discussion of timeless great works of literature, philosophy and political discourse.

There are no more than 20 participants that meet once a month for 90 minutes sessions to discuss a classic text. The Myerberg Senior Center is an excellent location with free parking and you don't have to be a senior or a member of the Myerberg to take part in this exciting session. Seminars take place on Tuesdays with start time 10:30 a.m. The cost of the Myerberg seminar is $495.00, which covers all expenses, including copies of the reading and refreshments.

Exercise & Physical Activity

Regular exercise offers many health benefits and promotes healthy aging. Aerobic exercise strengthens your heart, increases your body's ability to use oxygen and burns calories. A variety of classes and levels are available.

Yoga Class

  • Basic Aerobics
    Low impact aerobics and very basic choreography that includes slow and gentle stretching. Light weights are used for upper body strengthening.

  • Low to moderate intensity Aerobics
    Moderate to high intensity aerobic workout includes a variety of exercises designed to strengthen and tone muscles and promote flexibility and vigor. Bring your own weights.
  • Seniorcise
    Cardiovascular workout combined with muscular strengthening and flexibility to give you a complete total body conditioning.

  • Yoga
    Yoga is a form of exercise based on the belief that the body and breath are intimately connected with the mind. By controlling the breath and holding the body in steady poses, or Asanas, Yoga creates harmony in mind and body. Exercises are designed to ease tense muscles, tone up internal organs, and improve the flexibility of the body's joints and ligaments.

Languages and Literary Arts

  • Yiddish
    This class is conducted in Yiddish, but the ability to read and write Yiddish is not required.   Focus on conversation, reading and singing. The class culminates in an end-of-year concert.

  • Current Issues
    Instruction and discussion in a casual and relaxed atmosphere that centers on daily news items including politics, race relations, foreign policy, and the economy.
  • St. John's College Great Books Seminar
    St. John's College's Executive Seminars are offered once a month from September through June.   • Poetry
    Each week the class will read and analyze contemporary American poetry. Poetry speaks to our lives nd makes the ordinary, extraordinary!

Cultural Arts

The Center prides itself on promoting arts education and cultural arts by offering classes and student and faculty exhibitions throughout the year. The Center's art instructors are all nationally recognized artists who have shown their work extensively and have been the recipients of numerous awards.

  • Acrylic & Oil Painting

    For beginning to advanced students -- work at your own level with individual instruction. Students work from still life set-ups, photographs and from their own imaginations. A small materials fee is required.

  • Beginning Watercolor

    Instruction provided in traditional watercolor technique of layering transparent watercolor on paper. Build confidence and develop a clear sense of personal style and subject. Simple still life set-ups are used as subject matter. Students need to have some drawing experience. Materials can be purchased from the instructor.

  • Advanced Watercolor

    Students continue to increase their mastery of advanced techniques and skills, and increase their confidence and develop a clearer sense of professional style. Lessons are presented with frequent demonstration and class critiques. Materials can be purchased from the instructor.

  • Contemporary Art Workshop

    Two dimensional mixed media painting and drawing.
  • Painting

    Personal instruction in all media with artist Joan Erbe.

  • Tammra Sigler's Summer-Artist-in-Residence Workshop

    Designed to help students enlarge their vision and redefine their concept of "what is art."

  • Figure Sculpture

    Serious training in building clay sculptures, with an emphasis on figurative sculpture inspired by live models who pose for three consecutive classes. Students will learn techniques of firing, surface finishing and exhibiting finished works. Beginning students can learn to hand-build and sculpt in a short time if they work hard. Students are asked to buy tools and some specific surface options to share with the class.

  • Drawing

    For beginning and intermediate artists who want to improve their drawing skills through basic principles of seeing and drawing. Designed to teach students to draw in various media and develop artistic discrimination. Topics include: positive and negative spaces, contour drawing, line drawing, shading, creating shadows, and the basics of portrait art.

  • Hand-Built Clay

    For beginning to advanced learners.
    Students work independently to create either functional or sculpture projects with the help of the instructor.

Computer Classes

All levels of computer instruction are offered in small classes with hands-on instruction.

  • Beginning Computers

    For those with no computer experience. Learn Microsoft Windows and word processing basics.

  • Intermediate Computers

    Pre-requisite: Completion of Beginning Computer class or basic computer skills.
